I get excited about stupid things sometimes and this is one of them. I’ve now done this to two of old laptops, one about fifteen years old and another roughly seven years old.
If you’re think about switching to a chromebook but aren’t sure if you’re ready for a change in OS, this could also be a way to see all that you can do with a simple and elegant chromebook.
You need an old computer that is running windows way too slow and a 16GB USB drive. (They specifically ask for an 8GB or 16GB drive but I had a 32GB USB drive and it worked just fine).
Go to this website where can download what you need to create your USB installer. It’s pretty straightforward.
Once that’s done you need to input the USB into your old laptop and then turn the system on. Every brand is different but you need to hit F12 (on Dell) to go to your boot options and then select ‘boot from USB’. You can get better directions here.
Again, it’s all pretty straight forward. Once you’re on your desktop, click on the bottom right and the select ‘Install OS’.
When you’re done you’ll have given new life to that old laptop running a very lean OS that is more than suitable for most of your needs. A great idea to pass on those old laptops to your kids or someone in need. I just don’t like things going to waste.
Let me know if you’ve had a good experience with this. I loved it!
